Will Ripke was born in "Mudville", Buffalo Township, Buchanan Co., IA, in the community that slightly shifted location a few years later and became Aurora, IA. Will's mother died from complications of his birth. His 3 older siblings all die within 2 years of his birth. His father remarries Mary Hinz in 1882 and the second marriage produces 3 kids that are Will's half siblings. Will Ripke grows up in Aurora, but as a young man spends some time around 1905 working as a street car conductor in Kansas City, MO. He is in San Francisco, CA on April 19, 1906, when the earthquake hit that city. After that he lives for about 8 months in St. Paul, MN. In 1910 he moves to Alberta, Canada to homestead. He returns to Iowa in 1912 to marry Augusta Nehring. As newlyweds, they go back to Alberta, Canada, where Will has constructed a bare-bones house on the praire, and their first child, Margaret, is born there in 1913. When Margaret is less than a year old, the family moves back to Iowa for a few years. It is here, near Aurora, Iowa, that daughter Lucille is born. In 1918 Will Ripke and his family purchase land in Jackson Co., Wisconsin and begin farming there. Their third and last child is born in Wisconsin in 1923, Melvin William Ripke. The family moves one last time, in 1925, this time to a home in the city of St. Paul, MN. Will Ripke lives at 683 Simpson Ave. the rest of his life. He tries to get work in St. Paul as a street car conductor, but is deemed too old. He finds work as a night watchman. Will lives to age 75, dying in 1956.
