Obituary
Mr. Smith
The funeral for Willie
5/8 Smith, 72, Pearson
businessman, was held
Sunday afternoon, 3
o’clock at the First Baptist
Church there, of which he
was a member. Interment
was in Sweetwater Ceme-
tery at Pearson. He pas-
sed away last Saturday at
Louis Smith Hospital,
Lakeland, after an exten-
sive illness.
He was a native of Du-
Pont, Clinch county, the
son of the late Frank and
Rebecca Delk Smith.
He was a top graduate of
former Homerville High
School, a member Satilla
Lodge #163 F. & A.M.,
American Legion Post 173,
charter member Pearson
Lions Club, former Pearson
City councilman, former
teacher and principal in
the Homerville area, and
was the founder of Smith
Building Supply and Smith
Jewelry Store, both at
Pearson.
Long years ago, he was
invited and made a trip to
New York City to appear
on Robert Ripley’s “Be-
lieve It or Not” show be-
cause of his name with a
numerical fraction. The
story locally was that when
he was born, his late
father, “Capt. Frank”
Smith, said there were so
many Smiths in the county
he wanted his son to be
easily distinguished from
the others by his name.
Survivors include his
wife, Mrs. Ruth James
(Willoughby) Smith of
Pearson; one daughter;
two sons, two brothers,
Neal C. Smith and Bruce
B. Smith both of Homer-
ville; one step daughter,
one step son and four
grandchildren.
Officiating at the funeral
were Rev. Bob Pierce
and Rev. T. C. Darsey.
Active pallbearers were

Lastinger, Hampton

Davis, S. A. Summerlin,
Lehi White, Boyd James,

sell, and Herman McLe-
llan. Relihan Funeral
Home of Pearson was in
charge of arrangements.
