I have not been able to locate any documents for the birth or death dates for Abraham Ball. Of the researchers that I am in contact with, none have been able to locate these records either. This is so strange since there is plenty of documentation for his ancestors and descendants. There are many family trees that use the dates, birth 1807 & death 1858 for Abraham Ball. I don't know how these dates have been determined but for now, I will used them because they were on this memorial when it came to me. If anyone can help me resolve this mystery, I would love to hear from you.

Abraham Ball's father was Henry Ball, A Captain in the 17th Pa. Militia during the War of 1812. He was born Jan. 25, 1780 in Fredrick County, Maryland & died June 14, 1862 in Erie Co., Pa. Henry was the son of DanielBall, who was born April 29, 1757 in Fredrick County, Maryland and died Aug. 25, 1831 in Erie Co., Pa. Daniel served in the Revolutionary War and was married to Catherine Boyer, born Oct. 20, 1760 in Fredrick County Maryland and died July 20, 1822 in Springfield Twp., Erie Co., Pa. She was the daughter of Henry Boyer.*

Abraham Ball's mother was Hannah Devore, born ca 1774, died March 1825, Conneaut Twp., Erie Co., She was married to Henry Ball ca.1801 in Bedford County, Pa. Pa. She was buried in the Ball Family Cemetery in Girard Borough, Erie Co., Pa., along with her husband, Henry and his parent's Daniel & Catherine Ball. Hannah & Henry had 7 children, Abraham being the 2nd born, he was born ca 1807, died 1858, Conneaut, Erie, Pa. He was married Elvira/Eliza Sawdey-Ball..

Hannah's father was Cornelius DeVore, a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He was born Mar. 31, 1749 & christened Mar 1750, Deerpark, (now Port Jervice,) Orange County, NY. and died June 23, 1831 aged 83 y 3 m 3d Londonderry Twp., Bedford Co. Pa. Cornelius was married to Elizabeth Baker, born Jan 25, 1794 and died Jan 12, 1837, aged 87y 11m 18d, Londonderry Twp., The DeVores were buried near Wills Creek Methodist Church.

In her father's will, she is referred as, my daughter, Hannah, late wife of Henry Ball.*

Abraham's father, Henry, was 10 years old on the 1790 Census. The family was living in Fredrick County, MD.

On the 1800 Census, Henry was 20 years old and living in Bedford County with Daniel and the rest of the Ball family.

Henry Ball married Abraham's mother, Hannah Devore ca. 1801 in Bedford Co., Pa. Shortly after that, they moved to Conneaut Twp., Erie Co., Pa., as well did his parents, Daniel & Catherine.

In 1810, Abraham shows up for the first time, on the census under his father's family in Erie Co. Pa. He is on the list, under the "males under 10," category, along with his brothers, Henry, born 1800, Noah, born 1082 and Jacob, born about 1810. His sister Eliza Spicer, born 1806 is also on this census, listed in the "females under 10" category. Without any other records, Abraham's birth year in 1807 is a good guess.

Again, with no records of their marriage, we need to figure out the logical time that Abraham & Eliza were married. Their first child was Levi Ball, who was born 1826, in Erie Co., Pa. so, Abraham & Eliza were most likely married in 1825 or shortly before.

The 1820 census shows the Abraham Ball family living in Conneaut Twp., Erie Co., Pa. The family lived in Erie County, through the 1850 Census.*

BALL CEMETERY

There is a Ball Cemetery on the outskirts of Girard Township, back in the woods and very dilapidated. Henry Ball was a very large property holder. On property owned by him, he constructed a church called "Ball Church." It burned down, but was reconstructed, made into a school house and later a meeting house. The Ball cemetery is still there but sadly dilapidated and forlorn. The property changed hands a couple of times and is also known as the "Old Bristol Farms Cemetery," named for the people who bought the property. People that own the cemetery has used it as a dumping ground. There are very few tombstones left, the others have been broken up and thrown in piles. VERY SAD!!! The last time that I was there I was only able to find a couple of the tombstones in the the overgrown woods.

Emma Ball was the youngest child of Abraham & Eliza. On August 23, 1866, Richard Shepherd of Lake County, Ohio, filed for guardianship of Emma. He was the father-in-law of Emma's sister, Amanda Ball-Shepherd. Emma was a minor, at 13 years of age. The records show her as "a minor child of Abraham, deceased, late of the Township of Albion, Erie County, Pennsylvania."

Abraham's father, Henry Ball made out his will on June 20, 1862. In his will, he states, "I give to the children of my deceased son Abraham Ball forty dollars." This brings us 4 years closer to Abraham's death date.

On the 1860 Census, it shows Emma living with her Aunt & Uncle, Phillip & Harriet Sawdey-Searls in Perry Twp., Lake Co., Ohio. That means that Abraham probably died sometime between the 1850 & the 1860 census. If Emma was born Sept. 15, 1852, she must have been conceived about Dec. 1851. Seems like Abraham died between 1851 & 1860, but without any proof, I can't be sure. He could have died 1858 as some records show. I am leaving his death as 1858 as it was when I received this memorial. Hopefully, someone will contact me with a document of some kind that will prove his death date.
