Mary Katherine Barber was born in Texas, probably in or near Gonzales. She was called "Katherine" in most records but appears as "Mary K" in the 1930 census and on her death certificate. She was the only child of Dixie Waynant and Moses Lyman Barber. Moses' father, Stillman Barber, and family came to Gonzales, TX from Milmine, Piatt Co., IL in 1875-6. Stillman was an industrious farmer and businessman. Moses and his father, Stillman Barber, and brother, Gardner Clark Barber, farmed and traded. Stillman was originally from South Kingston, RI, but came to IL with his brothers when that land was settled.
Dixie Waynant was from Jackson Co., KS. She was the daughter of Catherine Little and Cyrus Waynant, originally from Pennsylvania. The Waynants were among the first settlers in Jackson Co.
Moses and Dixie were married in Kansas City, MO on 20 May 1891.
Clark Barber was killed in 1891. Katherine's grandmother, Mary Ann Murphy Clark Barber died in 1892. Stillman and Moses sold their interests in Gonzalez and headed for West Texas about the year 1897. Stillman purchased a 5000 acre ranch on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River in Fisher Co. near the town of Fisher, later North Roby, now a ghost town. Moses was the ranch foreman. He died in 1898 at the age of 39.
Dixie's mother, Catherine, died in 1900. The 1900 census found Dixie and Katherine living in KS with Dixie's father and siblings. Cyrus died in 1904. In 1905, Dixie was a school teacher at Flandreau, SD.
Stillman Barber died in 1907 and left Katherine "the sum of $1500 to be paid her when she arrives at the age of 21 years or marries." She was his only grandchild with the Barber name.
Dixie taught school at Indian schools in SD and MT. It is likely that Katherine stayed in KS with Dixie's family. Dixie was on a Crow Indian reservation in MT in 1910 census, but Katherine was back home in KS living with her aunt and uncles. (Two of Dixie's brothers and one sister lived together.)
Katherine married Richard A. McGrew. They were living in Beaver, Clallam Co, WA in 1930. In the 1940 census, Dixie W. Barber was living with the young family and their young son, age 6. Dixie died in 1953 in Clallam Co., WA but was buried back home in KS near her parents.
