Dena was the adopted daughter of John Kroeze and Maggie [Drent] Kroeze of Prairie View, Kansas. Dena's birth name was Katie Corbin. Her birth parents were James Corbin and Jennifer M [Bockover] Corbin. James died in May 1912 when Dena (Katie) was two years old. She was placed in an orphanage. Some or all of her siblings were taken in by local families.
Dena and Harold had four children: Earl, Daryl, C. R. "Bob," and Darlene. Most of Dena and Harold's married life was spent farming near Long Island, Kansas.
The couple spent last year of Harold's life in Agra, Kansas, where Harold served as an evangelist and as the Assembly of God pastor, a position Dena filled for a time after his death.
In 1940, Four years after the death of Harold Hartzog, Dena married George Gillespie, with whom she had two children: Floyd and Dena Marie.
