Byron P. Koenen, 69, of Clear Lake, died on Sunday, October 9, 2005, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 12, 2005, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Interment was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Byron Peter, was born on February 17, 1936 in Belmond, a son of Bernhard and Hattie (Steenblock) Koenen. He attended Belmond schools. On October 1, 1954 he married Vergene Watermiller at First Reformed in Meservey. Together they farmed in the Thornton area.

Byron was a farmer through and through. He served on the Thornton Co-op Board for 12 years, a few as president, and served many years on the Franklin County ASCS Committee. As a pilot, Byron flew over farms for the ASCS crews to take aerial photographs of farms. He also enjoyed fishing and motorcycling with his friends. A member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, Byron served the church in the consistory, as a deacon and elder. He also was a 4-H Leader in Franklin County.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, George and Cora Watermiller; and brother-in-law, Franklin Pitkin.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Valerie (Wayne) Koehler of Meservey and Renae (Joseph) Jones of Bothell, Washington; grandchildren, Shawn (Kelly) Koehler of Enid, Oklahoma, Brandon (Peggy) Koehler of Mason City, Matthew Koehler of Ames and Carly Jones of Bothell; three great-grandchildren; one niece; one nephew; sister, Marjorie (Ron) Jurgens of Belmond; and sister-in-law, Elaine Pitkin of Clear Lake.
