DEWITT TILDEN LOSES LEFT LEG AT DEPOT
Dewitt Tllden, a young white boy of 12 years [closer to 16], had his left leg almost entirely cut off by switch engine No. 94, the Western and Atlantic railroad, near the union depot on the Pryor street side nearly opposite the street door of Murphy. At this afternoon shortly after 3 oclock. It could not be learned exactly how this accident occurred.
The switch engine, of which Mr. John M. Baird, of West Simpson street, was engineer, was switching gears on the outside tracks. Young Tilden. with other boys of his own age was seen standing near the track when the rear part or the engine approached. It Is supposed a car step struck the boy, making him lose his balance, and as he tried to steady himself was brushed under the wheels. The engineer stated that he saw the boys, but they seemed out of the way. He received the signal to move on and as he did so looked the other way. It was all over, he said, before he knew what had happened. The car wheel ran diagonally over the boy's left leg below the knee, tearing all the flesh away and crushing a part of the bone Into small piece.
When young Tilden was removed from under the wheels, though perfectly conscious, he did not utter a single groan. he bore the escrueisting pain without a murmur, he merely clinches his teeth when he was placed in the ambulance for removal to the Grady hospital, where an Immediate examination was made. It was decided that the amputation of the left leg would be necessary hut that the brave young lad would live. Young Tilden worked In the offices of the Nashville. Chattanooga and St. Louis railroad, on the first floor of the Temple Court building, corner of Pryor and Alabama streets. He lived with his widowed mother at No. 13 Whitehall street, He had been working for the railroad offices for about a year and was well liked by his employers.
