William H. Stewart enlisted as a private in the Union Army, 6th Michigan Cavalry, Company M, 6th Regiment, on 10 September 1862 at the age of 44. He was mustered out on 15 April 1863 in Washington, DC.

The 6th Michigan Cavalry distinguished themselves on the battlefield during The Civil War.
