Leander "Andy" Stewart was the youngest stagecoach driver (age 15) in the West in the late 1860s. He drove a stagecoach led by a team of four horses with nary an incident between Grand Rapids and Battle Creek. He was the youngest person charged with driving the stagecoach and delivering mail. Stagecoach drivers who whipped horses to the point of drawing blood were immediately discharged. Leander Stewart, having grown up on a farm, had a special way with horses, intuiting and understanding the sensitive nature of horses. He was known for his kindness to horses and expertise related to driving four harnessed horses over rough terrain in a variety of weather conditions that included blizzards, drifting snow, electrical storms and rain, all of which required the skills of a seasoned horseman. In the twilight of life, Andy Stewart, age 80, was interviewed by a newspaper reporter who wrote a retrospective on the life of Andy Stewart, the youngest stagecoach driver in the West.
