Former Mayor Anderson Dies Here at Age of 72

W. S. (Andy) Anderson, 72, of 1558 Westridge Place, a former mayor of Casper, died Saturday night at his home.

He was discovered by a neighbor who had been checking on him periodically, due to his recent ill health.

Mr. Anderson was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital.

He has been employed with the Mountain States Telephone Co. for 41 years, retiring in April 1957 as district manager at Cheyenne.

In November 1957, he was elected mayor of Casper, defeating the incumbent, Tom Nicholas, by a wide majority. He was a leader in the institution of the city manager form of government in Casper, which went into effect during his term as mayor.

He was born in Rexburg, Ida., one of four brothers and three sisters in a pioneer farm family.

Mr. Anderson started his telephone career in 1916 at Rexburg, as a teamster when the telephone poles and supplies. Later that year he received his first management assignment at Briggs, Ida.

He was granted military leave in 1917 and served as a member of the 405th Telegraph Battalion in World War I. After the war he became a lineman and in 1922 he became manager at Malad City, Ida., followed by managerial assignments at Rexburg, Nampa and Boise, Ida.

Mr. Anderson moved to Wyoming as manager at Laramie, coming to Casper as manager in 1947. In 1951 when Casper was made a district, Anderson was the first Casper district manager.

On Dec. 1, 1955, he moved to Cheyenne to conduct a new telephone company program of management development.

Just after his retirement, Mr. Anderson became manager of the Rocky Mountain Oil Show at Casper.

He was a member of the American Legion and a past commander of two Legion posts. He was a member of Rotary International for over 30 years; a past president of the Nampa, Ida. Rotary Club. He was the first Scoutmaster in Idaho to serve with then new Boy Scouts of America organization and was a member of the Northern Wyoming Boy Scout Council.

Mr. Anderson was a member of four Masonic bodies, the Salvation Army Board, and was active in the Red Cross, Community Chest and the Chamber of Commerce.

His wife the former Dorothy Hughes, who he met and married in Idaho Falls, died in 1952, but he maintained the family home until his death.

Funeral arrangements for Mr. Anderson are pending at the Hillside Chapel of Memories.
