Fletcher Wayland Causey was the first of three children born to Robert L. Causey (1868-1920) and his wife Amanda J. Teague (1843-1933), of Randolph County, North Carolina. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Causey and his wife Mary McCulloch, and his maternal grandparents were David Teague and his wife Eleanor Field, all of Randolph County.

Fletcher appears to have married twice, around 1893, he married Donnie Langston (1871-?); and in the 1910s, he married Mary Rosa Caudle (1889-1922). He outlived both his wives. There were two children born of the first marriage, Mabel Clarice Causey (1896-1928, Mrs. Grover C. Cox) and Wade Hampton Causey (1898-1985, m. Margie Hanner); and three children born of the second marriage, Fletcher W. Causey, Jr. (1918-1973, m. Jessie Lassiter), Mary Rosa Causey and Minnie F. Causey.
