Melissa Echols New, 92, of Little Rock, passed away peacefully on Friday (Oct. 22, 2004), at Baptist Medical Center.
Born Oct. 5, 1912, in Hot Springs, she was the daughter of W.A. and Ella Lucy (Alston) Echols. She was raised in Conway, and attended Arkansas State Teachers College (now UCA). She taught elementary school, and also operated a beauty shop out of her home. She loved collecting rocks and bottles.
Preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. New, her parents, three brothers, one sister, and a daughter, Peggy New McKim Swaffer, Mrs. New is survived by two daughters, Pat Graves (Ken) and Betty Akins (Dusty); eight grandchildren, Ken, Jr., Roy, and Jeffrey Graves; Jim and Andy Akins; Melissa Ivy; Bill McKim; and Eddie Swaffer, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., today (Oct. 24, 2004), at Geyer Springs United Methodist Church, with Rev. Linda Singh presiding. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Conway.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
