SOUTH HOPE – Velma R. Hastings, 86, died October 15, 2009 at her home. She was born April 1, 1923 at St. George, the daughter of William Victor and Julia Arlena Wall Haskell Dennison. Her mother died before her third birthday, leaving four small children. Her father later married Bertha A. Callahan.
August 11, 1942, Velma married Albert William Hastings in Rockport. Married 56 years at the time of Mr. Hastings death in 1999, they lived all their married lives on the Hastings Homestead in South Hope.

For more than 28 years, she worked several places including GTE Sylvania in Waldoboro, from which she retired in 1984.

Other than her parents, her step-mother, her husband, her twin and an infant brother, Velma was predeceased by a sister, Verna May Dennison in1918, a daughter, Arlene Ruth Dennison in1938, three brothers, Alfred Earl Dennison in 1985, Donald Victor Dennison in 1996, Richard Clayton Dennison in 2001, and a son, William Ernest Hastings in 2001. She is survived by three sons, Donald Henry Hastings and his wife Deborah, Austin Frank Hastings and his wife Rosemary all of South Hope, Paul Albert Hastings and his wife Kathy Packard Hastings of Waldoboro; three daughters, Florance Annie Merrifield and her husband Lewis, Beatrice Rose Norwood all of South Hope, Helen Edna Ware and her husband Wendell of Washington, her daughter-in-law, Roberta Hastings of Plainville, CT; one brother, Alfred Leroy Butler of Warren, four sisters, Ada Louella Toto and her husband Anthony of Everett, MA, Sarah Evelyn Benner, Catherine Louise Widdecombe both of South Thomaston, Gladys Mae Dennison and her husband Norman of St. George; one sister-in-law, Pauline Dennison of St. George; 13 grandchildren, James Hastings, Vicki and Jason Baack, Eric Scott and Lisa Hastings, Mary Ann and Alan Giasson, Mark and Michelle Merrifield, Rod and Ryan Norwood, Wendell Ware, Jr. , Richard and Staci Ware, Angela Hastings, Matthew Hastings, Cheryl and Scott Stackpole, Jeremiah and Farra Hastings; seven step-grandchildren, Michele Cusano, Elisa and Nick Casparino, Heather and Tom Cain, Jason Hastings, Daniel Simmons, Amie and Nate Wyman; 17 great-grandchildren, Dylan and Mary Hastings, Bodie Hastings, Aidan Giasson, Hilary and Even Merrifield, Serephina, Kristina, Jaime and Bradley Norwood, Richard F. and Rowen Ware, Tyler and Autumn Pettee, Matthew D. Hastings, Lily and Abby Stackpole; nine step-great-grandchildren, Anthony and Alyssa Cusano, Eric and Jennifer Casparino, Victoria and Tom Cain, Alexandra Coggashall, Ryan and Katie Millay, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
