WRIGHT

Leland Duane Wright, son of Lee and Cleta Wright, was born Jan. 1, 1915, in Lucas County, Whitebreast Township, near Chariton, Iowa. He passed away May 25, 1997 in Creston at the age of 82.

Leland grew up on his parents' farm in Lucas County. In his early manhood, he also worked on his grandmother's and uncle's farms. Leland played baritone horn in the American Legion Band, which performed at various locations, including Cleveland, Ohio. He left the farm in 1937.

After earning his Merchant Marine license as a diesel engineer, Leland lived in Chicago and worked several barge lines operating on the Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers from 1938 until 1947.

In 1947, he joined the newly constructed Rural Electrification Administration (later REC) power plant located north of Creston where he worked as a shift engineer, dispatcher and operator until his retirement in 1980. Following his retirement, Leland worked for several years as a part-time auto parts delivery person for Creston Auto (later Big A).

Throughout his fifty years of residence in Creston, Leland was active in the local BPOE (Elks Club), Toastmasters Club, the Creston Chorus, and the Creston Municipal Band.

Leland married Shirley McNeil on June 15, 1941, in Batavia, Iowa.

Leland is survived by his wife, Shirley, a son Leland, Jr. and wife Sue Ellen of Kent, Ohio; two daughters, Susan Weight and husband Wayne of Accokeek, Md.; and Barbara Widick of Denver, Colo.,; four grandchildren, Brian Wallace and special friend Stephanie Calvin of Creston; Laura Widick of Aurora, Colo.; Elena Kramer and husband Andrew of New Haven, Conn.; and Rachelle Weight of Omaha, Nebr.; a brother Caryl Kent and wife Paula of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Phyllis Cherryholmes and husband Lloyd of Urbandale and Virginia Koestner and husband Charles of West Des Moines; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives; and many good friends and neighbors.

A memorial service was held in Creston at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 1997, at the Coen-Beatty Funeral Home for the immediate family and friends. The Rev. Lyle Kuell officiated. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 31, at the Fielding Funerl Home in Chariton, with interment in the Chariton Cemetery. Pastor Gary DeGeest officiated.

James Wright, Charles Wright, Alvin Whitlatch, Charles Koestner, Jesse Hunerdosse, and Lloyd Cherryholmes served as bearers. Memorials may be made in his name to the Lucas County Historical Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.
