[The following is from the Fresno Morning Republican, Saturday, August 9, 1902.] "John Cartwright, father of county clerk George W. Cartwright, died shortly before 12 o'clock midnight at his home hear Malaga. That Mr. Cartwright's condition was very critical was stated several days ago, so his demise was not unexpected. Death was due to a complication of diseases, he having been a sufferer for two years and a half. The deceased was a native of Charleston, Illinois and was sixty-nine years of age. He came to California in 1869, settling in Butte County. Seventeen years ago he moved to Fresno County and has since engaged in farming and in the manufacture of pruning shears. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. Survivors of Mr. Cartwright are his widow and six children; Edward, Newton, George, and John Cartwright, Mrs. Lizzie Cook and Mrs. Mamie Roach, all of whom were at their father's bedside until death. A brother who was visiting from the east was also present. He calmly named the friends who should act as pallbearers and gave directions for his funeral and requested that his body should be left at home until the day of the funeral. The funeral will be held from the family residence at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, August 10, 1902.
