Virginia (she went by Virginia) was born to Albert Lee and Mary Etta Shamblin Cox. She was the youngest of eight children: Baby, Hoyt Walter, Dorothy M, Francis Pearl, Albert Challis, Murl Agnes, Bethene Ruth, and Virginia Lee.
Virginia married first, Cecil Dowdend in 1941. They had a daughter, Susan who was born and died in 1942 in Nampa, Idaho. They divorced shortly thereafter.
Virginia then married Robert Lee Brough 30 June 1944 and they lived in San Rafael where their son was born. In 1973 they moved to Boise, Idaho and they lived there until both of their deaths. They were married almost 55 years.
