Frederick was about 7-years old when he came with his family to the United States. The censuses noted that he was deaf and dumb which was one reason he was always found living with family. Family lore says that not only was he a deaf mute, he was an albino with pink eyes and snow white hair even from childhood; he was strikingly handsome and liked by everyone. Although a deaf mute, he could read and write and was able to communicate readily by physical expression to those who knew him well.

In the 1860 Census he was living in Manchester Borough with his brother Jacob and his family. Frederick's occupation was gardener, the same as his brother's. Frederick was enumerated first which leads me to believe that he may have inherited the house from his parents. The occupation of gardener is a misnomer. The family business was raising fruit orchards and selling the fruit.

The 1862 city directory listed Frederick and Jacob as living above the railroad near Sedgwick Street, Manchester. Frederick was a laborer and Jacob a gardener.

Frederick could not be found in the 1870 Census. The 1871 city directory showed Jacob, Frederick and Christopher Gass all living on Sedgwick near Dill, Allegheny City. Jacob (1802) and Christopher are listed as gardeners and Frederick as a carpenter. This may have been the last year that Frederick worked, because, no occupation was given for him in later directories. In 1876, Frederick is shown living on California Avenue, Allegheny City. This was further defined in 1879, when he was listed as living on California Avenue near Sedgwick. He was listed like that in 1880, 1881, and 1884. Sometimes the address was given as California Avenue, 6th Ward, Allegheny City. Jacob and David Gass and Joseph Bachler had similar addresses.

In the 1880 Census he was Fred who lived with Annie (his sister) and Joseph Bachler on California Avenue, 3rd Precinct, 6th Ward, Allegheny City. His occupation was listed as "retired gent.", and he was shown as being feeble and deaf and dumb.

The 1886 and 1887 directories had Frederick boarding on Sedgwick Street, 6th Ward, Allegheny City. This is the same address for David Gass and Joseph Bachler. In 1889 there was a new address, Margaret near New Brighton Road, Allegheny City, but Division 1 of Union Dale Cemetery was between those streets. Joseph and David continue to look after him as they had the same address listing. In 1891 the address changed to Margaret and Sigel and it changed again in 1892 to Sigel near Colfax. This may not mean a move as Margaret, Sigel and Colfax Streets paralleled each other making little sense of the mentioned locations.

Because of his disabilities, after his parents died, his brother Jacob looked after him. After Jacob it was his sister Anna, and when she died, his brother-in-law Joseph and nephew David saw after him. Frederick is buried close to his parents.
