Wilford D., 84, died Monday, November 22, 1993. He was born September 11, 1909 in Oklahoma. Wilford served as Chief Engineer and Manager of Oklahoma turnpikes. Wilford Dean Hoback graduate from Oklahoma University in Civil Engineering. W.D. worked was the Urban Engineer for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation before joining the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority where he became Chief Engineer in 1951. When H.E Bailey retired in 1955, W.D. became Chief Engineer-Manager of the Authority. W.D. was a member of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association and was elected as second vice president in 1964 and first vice president in 1965. He was elected president of the association in 1966 at the association's 34th annual meeting in New York City. This meeting reconvened in Rome, Italy, and W.D. flew to Rome from New York. W.D. received a congratulatory telegram from Governor Henry Bellmon in which he said, "This selection by your fellows is a high and richly deserved honor both for and the state of Oklahoma. The association members made a wise choice, and I know your tenure will be most successful." W.D. served as the Turnpike Authority Manager until his retirement. The rest stop halfway between OKC and Tulsa on the Turner Turnpike is named the "W.D. "Bill" Hoback Plaza in his honor.
