Joined the CSA and appointed
Major and instructed to
build an Artillery Battery on
Confederate Point overlooking
New Inlet, which would later bear
his name. He was also assigned
to build a large battery on
Oak Island. For a year he was
working with the engineers in and
around the Ft Fisher area. He was
then transferred to the Fay-
etteville Arsenal. Here he did
much good service for the Con-
federacy. In particular, using
his professional skill he prepared
bolts for some Whitworth guns
which had been shipped from
England without ammunition or
projectiles. The bolts were used
as projectiles.
He was also the brother in law
of Gen. W.H.C. Whiting.
