Iva Frazier Paup wrote a book, "Buffalo Trails Plowed Under." It was published in 1944 as a continuing feature story in the Graphic Newspaper at Glidden, Iowa and later printed in book form by the Graphic. Iva was the
granddaughter of Enos Butrick, the first settler in Carroll County, Iowa. The book consists of the memoirs of her grandfather, known as the "Old Settler" and the stories he told of the early days in Greene and Carroll County, Iowa. The family lived in Missouri and traveled by covered wagon to Iowa in 1849. There are stories of the Indians, the extreme weather, the first doctor and minister to the settlement, the breaking of sod and planting of corn, the hunting and trapping, the Civil War, births, deaths, marriages, and Enos's help in organizing the local government. Enos Butrick died in 1883. He had seen many changes in those 34 years; the Indian and the buffalo were gone, the prairie land that he had pioneered was now cultivated and there was a gistmill, a sawmill, a railroad, and a town by the name of Glidden, Iowa.
