Funeral services for Thelma Jo Potts, 94, of Pasadena, Texas, and formerly of Levelland will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at First Baptist Church, Levelland. Burial will be in City of Levelland Cemetery under direction of George Price Funeral Home, Levelland. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, from 6 until 8 p.m. She died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, in Pasadena, Texas.
She was born on Nov. 7, 1916, in Whitewright, Texas, to Thurman Travis and Gracie Lillian Williams Hamilton. She married Sedrick Clifford Potts on June 8, 1938, in Floydada, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1984.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Elaine Qureshi.
She obtained her BA in education from Baylor University and then went on to get her master's in education from Texas Tech. She taught in the Levelland Independent School District for a number of years and, following her retirement, she taught English as a second language in the Intercity Mission of Houston and in American Samoa, and then returned to Levelland, where she taught ESL at Carver School. Thelma Jo was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Levelland.
Survivors include two sons, Carroll Potts of Pasadena, Texas, and Byron Ray Potts of Madison, Ala.; a daughter, Jo Anne Reid of Brownfield, Texas; two sisters, Ruth Gray of Kingwood, Texas, and Wilma Colston of Floydada, Texas; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
