Henry John Vogelsang, son of Herman and Emma Hedke Vogelsang, was born October 29, 1891 on a farm near Winkler. He died at the age of 87 at St. Mary's Hospital, Monday, December 25, 1978.

Henry started school at Winkler and later attended Heller School as the family moved to the Otter Creek Community in 1900. He attended Kansas State Agricultural College during the school year 1907-1908, returned to the family farm and lived there until 1920 when he purchased his farm in Wildcat Township.

On December 20, 1921, he married O'Tillie Nelson; they had one daughter, Rowena. They lived on their farm in Wildcat Township until September 1965, when the Fort Riley Military Reservation was expanded and they moved to 2219 Ivy Drive, Manhattan. O'Tillie died September 28 of this year.

Henry was a former member of the Cleveland School Board, Wildcat Township Board, and the Randolph Men's Club.

His farm and nature in general was his element. He had a keen understanding of wild life and land. Like President Eisenhower, he wanted to make his land a little better than the way he found it. He was very fond of his livestock, always referring to them in personal terms, particularly the work horse; he spoke of them as if they were fellow farm workers. In 1945 in in 1947, he won the DeKalb Riley County Corn Growing Championship with highest yield.

He made friends easily and kept them as friends. Everyone who knew him knew also Henry had one enemy he fought until the end -- The Mock Thistle. He enjoyed a lot of victories against them and would urge you to continue the fight.

"Uncle Henry" had very close ties with both sides of the family and he and "Aunt Tillie" had enjoyed a long and happy life. He will be well remembered and missed by us all.

"Grandpa Henry" as he was affectionately called by the family, is survived by his daughter, Rowena Heley and her husband Berton; grand-daughter Brooke Ukena and her husband, Donald; four sisters, Ann Fitzpatrick, Lillie DeWyke, Louise Daniels, and Nellie Toburen; and one brother Walter Vogelsang. Three sister preceded him in death.

Services were held December 28 at Holmes Funeral Home in Riley, Kansas, the Reverend Wilbur Purvis officiating. Interment was in Riley Cemetery.
