Willie Helton, age 92, passed away on December 1, 1978.
Mrs. Helton lived with step-granddaughter Mrs. Bertha Guffey of Swearengin since shortly after she broke her hip 4 months ago. Until then she had been in the Boaz Nursing Home 3 years. After she broke her hip she learned to walk again, mostly with a walker.
She and her husband Jake lived near Section in Jackson County until he died 33 years ago. After that she lived with various relatives on Gunters Mountain, mostly in the Swearengin area, taking care of their children and helping in other ways. She was a member of the Free Holiness Church.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Vestie Wilson of Rainsville; 2 stepdaughters, Mrs. Rosie Guffey of Swearengin and Mrs. Jencie Knight of near Scottsboro; a stepson, John Helton of Section; a step-daughter-in-law, Mrs. Annie Helton of Fyffe; 5 grandchildren and a number of step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was at the Free Home Baptist Church Monday. Rev. Charles Willmon officiated and Carr Funeral Home directed. The Roy Guffey Quartet sang. Burial was in the Free Home Cemetery.
The pallbearers were T. J. Helton, Anthony Stapler, Kelvy Helton, Ollie Helton, Holly Helton, Henry Mason and Robert Walls.
