Colonel Joseph A. Gerk, former Chief of Police of the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department,He was the Chief of Police from April 9, 1925, to October 1, 1934, and was the first Chief to command the entire department from the new police headquarters at 1200 Clark Ave. that opened in 1927. Colonel Gerk died at Missouri Basptist Hospital of cardiac arrest. He had also been suffering from chronic bronchitis and asthma for 15 years prior to his death. He lived at 2635 Gurney Ct. in Saint Louis. After his retirement from the department, he was a consultant for Mallinkrodt Chemical Company. He lived to be 82 years, 9 months, and 26 days. He was predeceased by his wife, Corinne Gerk, in 1938, and his son, Joseph A. Gerk Jr., in 1931. He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery on April 5, 1957.
