Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Navy at New York and served as a Boatswain's Mate First Class. His citation reads: "On board the USS Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Wilke displayed extraordinary and bravery and coolnes throughout the action".
