Simon served under his brother Capt. John Van Patten in the 2nd Albany Mililtia. It is likely he was the sharpshooter who carried Claas' 'Old Hollander' flintlock into battle, a weapon
prized by seven generations including Capt. Adam Conde of the Glenville Horse Artillery. It was reported that he (Simon)felled an Indian walking along the far bank of the Mohawk. His burial site has not been found yet.
