GENE PARKER, EX-NEWSPAPER EXECUTIVE, DEAD AT AGE 69
Ernest Eugene 'Gene' Parker, 69, of 516 Gaston Drive, died March 31, 1990 in Charlotte Memorial Hospital.
A native of Gaffney he was the husband of Sue Turner Parker of the home and the son of the late E. R. and Katie Lillian Campbell Parker. He retired from the Herald-Journal after 28 years of service. He started his newspaper career with the Herald-Journal as chief of the Gaffney Bureau in 1948 and transferred to Spartanburg in 1952 and was assigned to the City Hall beat. He was transferred to the Display Advertising Department in the summer of 1956. After serving in that department about a year, he became editor and publisher of The Cherokee Scout in Murphy, NC. He later returned to the Herald-Journal and was employed as an advertising account executive. He was named retail advertising manager in 1964 and was promoted to advertising director in 1972. He was a member of Spartanburg First Baptist Church and was a former Sunday School teacher at Morningside Baptist Church. He was a mason, a Shriner and a former member of the American Business Club and Murphy Civitan Club. He served for 12 years as a member of the Board of Directors of Spartanburg Greater
Chamber of Commerce and served one term on the Board of Directors of Newspaper Advertising Executives Association of the Carolinas. A veteran of World War II, he served as a flying radio/radar operator with the 438th Troop Carrier Group in the European Theatre. He was associated with Gaffney Broadcasting Inc. for seven years until April 1984.
Also surviving are two sons, Douglas G. Parker of Columbia and Scott Parker of Greenville; one brother, Raymond Parker of Gaffney; three sisters, Marie Mullinax and Catherine Green of Gaffney and marguerite Wetzel of Spartanburg; one half-sister, Fannie Burns of Gaffney; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Robert C. Morgan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heart Association of South Carolina, Spartanburg County Unit, 9 Oakland Ave., Inman, 29349.
