MRS. HENRY METZLER

Mrs. Mary Metzler, wife of Henry Metzler, died on Friday, Jan. 18, 1918, after an illness of one week. She was suddenly taken sick on Friday 11th. In spite of medical assistance which was at once summoned and in spite of solicitous care she grew weaker from day to day, until her end came last Friday at 4:45 p.m. Mrs. Metzler was one of the oldest inhabitants of Trinity Lutheran Church. Mrs. Metzler, nee Gruenewald was born October 3rd, 1838 in St. Clair Co., Ill. She was baptized in infancy; by confirmation she was admitted to full membership in Evangelical Lutheran Church. On June 5, 1859 she was united marriage to Mr. Henry Metzler, who now after more than 58 years of married life survives her. The young couple lived on a farm in St. Clair Co., Ill., for nine years; and four of their eleven children were born there. Of these children, two twin girls, Wilhelmina and Emma died in infancy.

In 1868 Mr. Metzler and his family came to Effingham Co., and settled on a farm which he had bought a short time before. The village of Shumway did not exist at that time. For seven years the family lived on this farm. When the Wabash railroad was built and the village of Shumway was founded, they moved to town, where Mr. Metzler engaged in business for nine years. In 1886 they built the spacious house that has remained their home ever since.

Mrs. Metzler experienced her full share of toils, hardships and privations of pioneer age. Besides raising her nine children she frequently assisted in the work on the farm and after they moved to town she often had quite a number of boarders. After the birth of the twins she was sick for a whole year and suffered severe pain. A sore limb caused her considerable trouble otherwise she enjoyed good health. On the morning of January 11th she was suddenly taken sick. Medical assistance was at once summoned; her children hastened to her bedside. She grew weaker from day to day. At 4:45 p.m. Friday, January 18, 1918, she expired at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 15 days.

She is survived by her aged husband and her nine children, Mary, now Mrs. Fred Omart(sic), two miles north of town; August of Strasburg, Ill., Anna, now Mrs. Chas. Schaefer, Shumway, Ill.; Edward of Mansfield, Ill., William of Champaign, Ill.; Ferdinand, Shumway, Ill., Herman, Shelbyville, Ill.; Ida, now Mrs. John Weber, of Strasburg, Ill., Louise, now Mrs. Dr. W. E. Tennant, Fond du Lac, Wis.

She is further survived by 27 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren and a host of distant relatives and friends.

She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the Ladies Aid Society. She took active part in all church work. May she rest in peace.

Funeral services were conducted at Trinity Lutheran church at 10 o'clock Monday 21st. Rev. H. Bergsteadt officiating. The floral tributes were elaborate; and the church was filled to capacity. All her children and a number of grand-children were present. Interment was at the Lutheran cemetery, one mile north of town.

Mr. Henry Metzler will make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Chas. Schaefer for the time being.
