John L. Jones was enlisted by Captain James Gorman as a private at Stockton, San Joaquin County, California, July 18, 1863, and was mustered in Company L, 1st California Cavalry, by Captain A. Dickerson Woodruff, at Stockton August 15. At enlistment he was described as age 19 years, that he was born in Maine and that his occupation was Laborer. Private Jones was posted to Arizona Territory. Private Jones was reported missing in action following an engagement with Apaches 8 miles from Croton Spring July 13, 1865 and declared dead. His remains were never recovered.
