Civil War: Company I, 5th California Infantry
Johann Heinrich Doscher was born in Doveren, Germany, in June 1832. He left Germany for the United States and headed for California. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private using an English version of his name, John Henry Dosher. He was sworn in by Second Lieutenant Thomas Buckley at Marysville December 11, 1862, and was mustered into Company I, 5th California Infantry, February 28, 1863. Robert A. Christian, Acting Assistant Surgeon (a Contract Surgeon), was the Examining Surgeon of Recruit Dosher. Private Dosher accompanied Company I to Tucson, Arizona Territory, where he was posted from April 1863 until March 1864. He was reported missing in action following an attack by Apaches on his company in Doubtful Canyon on May 4, 1864, while it was en route from Fort Cummings, New Mexico Territory, to Fort Bowie, Arizona Territory. He was later declared dead, but as Private Henry John Dosher. His remains were never recovered. Sergeant Charles E. Tobias and Privates Chandler C. Abbott, Charles Nelson, Paul D. Stone and James R. Webb were wounded during this same engagement.
