William was the 4th of 7 children (5 sons and 2 daughters) born of Steward Esty and his wife Abigail (1730-1811). William's siblings were: Edward (1753-1836), Elizabeth (b. 1754), Sarah (b. 1757), Isaac (b. 1762), Steward (Stuart) (1764-1841), and David (1766-1843).

At the time of the Revolution, Stoughton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts included the towns of Canton, Sharon and a large part of Foxboro.

William enlisted, November 12, 1777, in Captain John Dodge's Company of detached Militia, Colonel Jacob Gerrish's Regiment of Guards. On a muster roll of the same Company and Regiment for February, 1778, William was listed as a Sergeant. He served 4 months and 22 days to April 5, 1778 at Cambridge and Charlestown, Massachusetts guarding members of British Major General John Burgoyne's Army who capitulated at the Battle of Saratoga, September and October, 1777.

After the Revolution the Esty family moved from Stoughton to Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.

William married, October 12, 1788 at Westmoreland, Anna Daggett by whom he had 8 children (2 sons and 6 daughters): Nabby (b. 1791), Fanny (b. 1793), Betsey (b. 1795), Anna (b. 1797), Gilman (1799-1877), Caroline (b. 1801), and 2 others names not known.

William and his wife Anna moved from Westmoreland to Coventry, Orleans County, Vermont about 1802.
