Former pantry chef at Knoebels Alamo restaurant
Prudence S. Getty, 90, longtime resident of Cleveland and Locust townships, died late Saturday afternoon, Dec. 18, 2010, at Columbia Montour Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville, where she had been a resident since Thursday. She had been in failing health since 2007.
She was born March 29, 1920, at home, in Cleveland Township, the daughter of the late Pendro D. and Kathryn Fahringer Leiby.
Prudence, a homemaker, also worked at the former Regal Shirt Factory, Rohrbach Farm Market, Knoebels Amusement Resort, where she was pantry chef for the Alamo, and also helped her husband on the dairy farm.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Numidia, the Women's Guild, and the Roaring Creek Valley Flower Club.
Prudence enjoyed gardening, flowers and embroidery, loved to cook and bake, enjoyed traveling, was very family-oriented, strong and sweet. She never complained, was a lady and very independent.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold R. Getty, who died in 1979, ending a marital span of 34 years. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Leiby. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by five daughters: Alice E. Getty, of Bloomsburg; Kathy H. Beaver and her husband Lane, of Elysburg, with whom she made her home since 2007; Paula I. Papsidero and her husband Joseph, of West Caldwell, N.J.; Glory A. Getty and her partner Glenn Wayland, of Pittsburgh, and Laura J. Shoup and her husband Dennis, of Shohola; three granddaughters: Katlin and Jenae Shoup, and Alyson Papsidero.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. from the Allen R. Horne Funeral Home, 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa, with the Rev. Joan Brown, her pastor, assisted by the Rev. Donald Snyder, retired pastor and friend. Burial will be in St. Paul's United Church of Christ Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be held Tuesday evening, Dec. 21, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
