Sidney Garrison (Gary) Acker, a 24-year-old Harrisonburg school teacher, was killed in a deer hunting accident in Augusta County, southwest of Briery Branch, early Thursday morning.

Mr. Acker was struck in the stomach by a rifle shot fired by a 14-year-old boy and died enroute to Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Augusta County Deputy Sheriff George Stephenson said that Mr. Acker and his brother, William Hampton Acker of Raleigh, N.C., had arrived at Narrow Back Mountain just minutes before the mishap. Day was beginning to break when the brothers were headed up the mountain toward the area in which they planned to hunt. Gary was leading and his brother was following.

The youth told officers thathe heard a noise and fired a shot from his .30-30 Marlin rifle. Officers said the boy went to summon help which William Acker stayed with his wounded brother.

Harrisonburg Rescue Squadmen, who received the call, at about 6:45 a.m., said they had to walk some three miles to reach the victim and bring him from the mountain on a stretcher. He died enroute to the hospital.
