He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1791, studied medicine, in 1794 entered into practice with his father, and followed his profession in New Ipswich throughout his life. He lived for a time in the house built by Noah Cooke, upon the north side of the old country road, but upon the opening of the Turnpike built for his dwelling the house still standing on the north side of that highway opposite the tavern building long known as Clark's Hotel. That house, later for many years the home of Henry Otis Preston, was the first one erected in the Center Village upon the Turnpike, the home of Rev. Stephen Farrar at the summit of the hill, where the road from "Farrar's Mill" crossed, having been built long before the time of the Turnpike. The narrow house next westerly from that of Dr. Preston was also built by him for use as his office. He served the town as its clerk for a long time, and was also one of the selectmen.
