He followed mercantile pursuits in Dubuque,Iowa, Toledo,Ohio and Buffalo,N.Y., and was also occupied with useful inventions. He was engaged in the work of the Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. All of these activities forbade for a large part of time his permanent residence with his family, which for many years occupied the house built by Rev. Stephen Farrar a little northwest from the old meeting-house on the hill.
