John W. Busby, born in Lexington, S. C., son of Nathaniel Busby (1782–1852) and Amelia Rhoden (1800–1830) upon the death of his father in 1852 he was living with sisters Nancy, Lucinda and sister Elizabeth and her husband Alexander O. Bouknight who soon moved to Upshur Co., Tx. together with John W. Busby about 1852-53. They came by wagon train with his sisters Elizabeth and Priscilla and their husbands and James Hilliard Busby, his brother. Priscilla & James both married Bouknight siblings. On 13 Sep 1855 in Upshur County, Texas John W. married Matilda A. Stinson. He was a soldier in the Confederate army during the Civil War and records shows on 10 Nov 1861 he mustered Co. G, 7th Texas Infantry Regiment. He was also in Co. K, 11th Texas Infantry. On 16 Feb 1862 he was a Prisoner of War at Fort Donelson, Tennessee and the record shows he was admitted to Yankee Prison Hospital, Camp Douglas, Illinois, July 1, 1862, for sickness and then returned to duty, July 10, 1862 and again admitted to the Prison Hospital, July 2, 1862, and August 11, 1862. He and his wife had 8 children together they raised in Upshur County, Mary Lugenia Busby (1857 – 1883), Texie Ann Busby (1861 – 1918), Thomas P. Busby (1866 – 1873), J. D. Busby (1866 – 1867), E. J. Busby (1868 – 1868), Lee F. Lafayette Busby (1872 – 1901), and Docea Busby born about 1873.
