Daughter of John Ranney of Ohio, who had moved to the Great Plains to homestead, and Mary Manning of Catskill New York, whose family had also moved to the Great Plains as homesteaders, Elizabeth was born and raised in Kansas. She married Elmer Ellsworth Hatch, a Baptist minister, in 1898. After serving several congregations in the Great Plains, they moved their family to the Lodi, CA area around 1916 at the behest of Elmer's uncle Forrest Hatch. They had the following surviving children:

Josephine Hatch Horton (1899-1989)
Lois Hatch Deimel Washburn (1902-1959)
Alice Hatch Krasnow (1905-1981)
Worth Hatch (1907-1980)
Dean Foster Hatch (1909-1984)
Laurence Philip Hatch (1911-1988)
