Mr Hays served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a heavy mortar crewman in the Rhineland Central Campaign in Europe. During his time in the Army, he received a Good Conduct medal, a Silver Star, a Distinguished Unit Badge, an American Service Medal, an American Theater Service Ribbon and a European-African Middle Eastern Ribbon.
