Emil J. Hanff was born 8th September 1844 in Schleusingen near Hildburghausen, Saxony resp. Prussia. His parents were the miller Adam Hanf (in USA John Hanff, see US Census 1860) and his wife Dorothee born Gleichmann, both from Schleusingen. The family Hanf (father, mother, two daughters Johanna and Caroline and son Emil) together with Dorothee's father Eberhard Gleichmann, a master butcher in Schleusingen, and Dorothee's two sisters Traugotte and Wilhelmine Gleichmann emigrated in spring 1846 from Schleusingen to the USA. The families Hanf and Gleichmann received their emigration papers on 28 march 1846 in Schleusingen.
