The first to settle in the area that later became Rockdale County was William MITCHELL, 1777-1859. William MITCHELL moved in 1834 or 1835 to a farm on South River, below Flat Shoals, or Panola, in Henry, now Rockdale County, about 12 miles southeast of Decatur, Georgia.

The Funeral Services at Trinity Yesterday Morning.
The last marks of respect for the life of a good citizen and earnest Christian, were paid the memory of Hon. Alexander Weldon Mitchell yesterday.
At 10 o'clock, the remains were taken from the residence to Trinity church, where a large concourse of friends had assembled to attend the services.
Rev. Dr. Walker Lewis, pastor of Trinity, conducted the solemn ceremonials, and his remarks on the lifework of the deceased were most appropriate.
The pallbearers were Anthony Murphy, G. W. Parrott, G. B. Adair, A. P. Stewart, Captain J. W. Morrow, Judge E. B. Rosser, W. J. Tanner, R. T. Dorsey.
A large honorary escort was in attendance, selected from his life-long friends, and a long procession followed the remains to Oakland, where they were laid to rest.
Thus ended the earthly existence of a man who had outlived most of the friends of his youthful days, and who had ever labored for the good of his fellow men." The Atlanta Constitution, 1868-1929.
