Manassa "Nas" Hennessee

He was married three times: to Rachel Louellen Sloan (1859-1884); to Mary Jane Suddreth (1864-1901)with no children from either marriage. In 1902 he married Margaret Louisa Scott. They had 11 children.

Nas Hennessee's grandson shares the following information:

"His nickname was "Nas." Nephews called him "Uncle Nas." His children called him "Papa." I called him "Papa Hennessee." His third wife, buried nearby, was Margaret Louisa Scott. I called her "Mama Hennessee." They were my grandparents."

His death certificate states that he died of a "pulmonary embolus following acute appendicitis and appendectomy the day before."

Extracted from his obituary in the Morganton, NC, News Herald:

". . .Born in Burke county, Mr. Hennessee has made his home in the county all his life, operating a mercantile business in Glen Alpine for a long period of time placing him as perhaps one of the county's oldest merchants.

. . . . During his lifetime Mr. Hennessee has made countless friends throughout this section and the news of his death will be received with much regret. Two years ago he was presented with his fifty-year membership button from the Masonic Lodge and was one of the most active members of the Glen Alpine Methodist church."

Survivors included his widow; six daughters;and four sons.
