Guy Righter, 77, former superintendent of the mechanical department of The Herald, died early yesterday in Richmond, Ind., where he had lived since 1913. His body will be brought to the Brintlinger Funeral Home for services Saturday and burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Righter was born in Decatur Feb. 10, 1876, a son of Benjamin and Mattie E. Hanks Righter.
At the age of 15 he began work on the Decatur Republican as an apprentice printer-pressman and three years later became pressroom foreman. In 1896 he took a job as linotype machinist-operator on The Review, a position he held until 1901 when he went to work for an Ottawa, Il. paper for one year. In 1902 he returned to Decatur as a machinist operator for The Herald and became mechanical superintendent in 1903. When .F. S. Dodd of Decatur became publisher of the Richmond, Ind. Item, Mr. Righter went with him to Indiana and worked there as mechanical superintendent for the Item and its successor, the Item-Palladium until his retirement in 1944. Since then he had been technical advisor. He was the author of a pamphlet "Casting and Mixing Printer's Metals" which was first published in 1908 and reprinted in 1923.
Mr. Righter was married Oct. 3, 1901 in Decatur to Miss Ardie Wood who died May 25, 1931. In 1932 he was married to Mrs. Clara Bone who survivies. He also leaves three children, Mrs. Virginia Leichner, Champaign, and Mrs. Martha E. Willman, Urbana, and a son, Guy B. of Manhattan Beach, Calif. There are two step-children and several grandchildren.
