"Malcolm B. Douglas Sr., 77
Involved in family farm more than 50 years

Malcolm Brown Douglas Sr., 77, of State Route 4, died on Monday, April 12, 2004, at his home following a long illness. Born on Feb. 26, 1927, in Hampton, he was the son of the late Walter W. and Marcia (Brown) Douglas. He married Jean Harris on Feb. 21, 1947. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Mr. Douglas was a graduate of Whitehall High School, Class of 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. Mr. Douglas began dairy farming in 1948 and was involved in the family farm for more than 50 years. He served as Hampton town assessor from 1963 to 1967. He was elected Hampton town supervisor in 1968 and served in that position until 1973. He was chairman of the Washington County Board of Supervisiors in 1972 and 1973. In 1974 he was appointed Washington County civil defense director which later became the Office of the Washington County emergency Services. The county-wide dispatching of fire, police and emergency services began and he served as director of emergency services through 1989. Mr. Douglas served as county budge office from 1982 to 1991 and was a member and former trustee of the Whitehall United Methodist Church. He was a member of the building committee of both the new church and the parsonage. He was a member and past Master of Whitehall Grange No. 922. He was a member and past Master of Washington County Pomona Grange, a member of the NYS Grange, a former member of the NYS Grange Headquarters Building Committee, a member of the American Legion Post No. 83 of Whitehall, a member of Eureka Lodge Free & Accepted masons of Fair Haven, Vt., and a former director of the Washington County Fair Board. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, F. William Douglas, and two sisters, Dorothy Whitaker and Helen Ramey. In addition to his wife, Jean (Harris) Douglas, he is survived by his three children and their spouses, William H. and his wife Sally of Hampton, Malcolm Jr. and his wife Joan, of Whitehall, and Janice McPhee and her husband Michael, of Ballston Spa; seven grandsons, Walter H. Douglas and his wife May of Hampton, Stephen and Matthew Douglas of Whitehall, Sean McPhee of Alden, N.Y., Kevin McPhee of Clifton Park, Daniel and Patrick McPhee of Ballston Spa; two great granddaughters, Laurel and Lydia Douglas of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was conducted on Thursday, April 15, at the Whitehall United Methodist Church in Whitehall with the Rev. C. Don Wheeler, pastor officiating. Interment followed at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven, Vt."
