Fr. Al was born in Rogers, MN to Matthais and Laura Heuring. After his father's death in 1926, he moved to Cedar Falls, IA, where he attended high school and the University of Northern Iowa. He then received his Masters Degree in History from Notre Dame. He entered the Catholic Seminary at St. John's University in MN. He was ordained a priest on December 17, 1944 in the Dubuque, IA Diocese.
In Iowa, he served the spiritual and physical needs of his four parishes. As pastor, he built two churches and schools from the ground up. In 1974, he was appointed Monsignor. He continued his pastoral duties until 1985 when he retired and moved to San Mateo to be with his family. While retired he continued to serve many parishes on the peninsula, particularly, St. Gregory's. He was a priest for sixty-six years.
He is survived by his best friend and loving brother, John O'Rourke, his brothers Gene (Esther) O'Rourke, Joe (Terry) O'Rourke, sister, Joan O'Rourke, many nieces and nephews and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthias and Laura Heuring, his step-father, John O'Rourke, his sisters, Wilhelmine Hansen, Alberta Heuring, Mary Ann O'Rourke, and his brother, Loren O'Rourke.
Fr. Al was loved by all for his spirituality, his gregariousness, his quick wit, and his wonderfully original sense of humor. Fr. Al had a joke for every occasion. He possessed a keen mind and an avid curiosity up to the time of his death. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A visitation and rosary will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gregory's Church in San Mateo, followed by the celebration of his life at mass at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon in the church hall will be held after the mass.
Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery following the luncheon.
