George Russell Dean, 89, beloved husband and father (aka "Big Daddy"), passed away peacefully on the 11th of December 2010, at University Place Nursing Center in Houston. George was born in Jourdanton, Texas on October 28, 1921 to William M. and Emma R. Dean. After graduating from Jourdanton High School, George worked as a patient aide for one year at the Confederate Home in Austin before attending Texas A & I College (now Texas A & M University, Kingsville) on a football scholarship.
When World War II broke out, George volunteered for the Army Air Corps and served an an Air Traffic Controller on several islands in the Pacific Theater, eventually attaining the rank of MSgt in the Air Force Reserve. Following the war, George returned to Texas A & I where he continued playing football and met the love of his life, Annell Falkenburg. Following graduation, George spent several years coaching and teaching at Rio Grande City and George West High Schools. In 1950 he began his sales and management career, first in the Sporting Goods business, then spent over 30 years in the transportation industry retiring frem Lee Way Motor Freight in 1982.
Concurrent with his business career, George logged over 30 seasons as a football official with the Southwest Football Officials Association. George was also a Scottish Rite Master Mason for over 65 years and a charter member of Willow Meadows Baptist Church. His favorite pastime was hunting deer, quail, and turkey with numerous close friends, then completing a long day in the field with a competitive game of dominoes.
George is survived by Annell, his devoted wife of 63 years; sister, Ruth D. Morris; brother-in-law, Norris B. Falkenburg and wife JoAnn; son, George R. Dean, Jr. and wife Ann, and their sons Russ, Drew, and David; daughter, Debra A. Parker and husband Dan, and their sons Todd, Tyler, and Trevor; son, Terry A. Dean and wife Karyn, and their children Jennifer and Alex; son, Kenneth P. Dean and his children Megan, Melanie, and Miles; grand daughters-in-law Becky Dean, Cheryl Parker, and Whitney Parker; and great-granddaughters Adeline and Emma Parker.
The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the professionals at Home Instead Senior Care, University Place Nursing Center, and Compassionate Care Hospice of Houston for their personal and holistic care during our father's final days.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 15, 2010 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm with Pastor Matthew Vandagriff officiating. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Garden of Memories.
