Rev. Thomas Butler was educated in local public schools and at St. Bonaventure College. After graduation from college, he entered Christ the King Seminary, St. Bonaventure University, and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Leavenworth KS on June 24, 1884. He was assigned pastor of St. Mary Church at Chetopa KS and Irish Creek KS.
He came to the Diocese of Buffalo in May, 1896. After serving as assistant pastor in two parishes for a short while, he was appointed pastor of St. Patrick Church, Randolph in 1897 and St Mary Church, East Arcade in 1903. In 1909 he established St Joseph parish in Bliss and built the church and Rectory. He became pastor of St. Patrick Church in Java Center in 1919 and finally pastor of Assumption in Portageville in 1923. He remained there until his final illness, and he died at the Sister's of St. Francis home in Williamsville. He was 73 years old.
