Obituary, The Peru Pointer, June 1, 1917: VETERAN GOES TO HIS FINAL REWARD -- J. D. Rouse, Nebraska Pioneer, Died Last Saturday Night -- John D. Rouse was born November 6, 1842 in Muskingum Co., Ohio, and died Saturday night, May 26, 1917, at the age of 74 years, six months and twenty days. He came with his father's family to Illinois in 1853. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. C, 57th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving three years in the Tennesese [sic] Campaign and with Sherman on his march to the sea. He was discharged at Savanah [sic].

On September 12, 1867, he was married to Fannie S. Gilbreath. In February, 1868 they came to Nebraska crossing the Missouri River at Plattsmouth and homesteading near Greenwood. In this pioneer home, three children were born, Edwin L., Lou, and Charles who died in infancy. The two eldest, E. L. Rouse of this city and Mrs. D. H. Sweet of Ericson, Nebr., with his wife, survive him. He leaves beside six grandchildren, his only sister Mrs. J. S. Matthews of Arnold, Nebraska, and four brothers: J. P. of Alvo, Anderson of Lincoln, Frank M. and Robert M. of Nelson, all of whom have been here during the week.

In 1878 Mr. Rouse moved with his family to Nuckolls county. Here he took an active part in civic and political life, serving as county treasurer and chairman of the Congressional committee when R. D. Sutherland was elected Congressman from the fifth district.

In 1902, the pioneer spirit still dominant, he moved with his wife and his daughter's family to an irrigated ranch in Colorado, in the Grand River valley. After two years there he came to Edson, Kansas, where he lived until coming to Peru in 1909.

Mr. Rouse was a member of Martin Stowell Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, and the local lodge of the Ancient order of United Workmen. As a young man he joined the Congregational Church, but about thirty years ago he united with the Christian Church and has been an active worker and official through all these years. He was a man respected and honored by all who knew him, and the community suffers a distinct loss in his death.
