He was a retired US Navy Veteran of Vietnam and retired from maintenance at Bayer Corporation.
Mr. Smith was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, John Michael Smith, Jr. and wife Tracie of Summerville; one sister, Virginia S. Perrell of Mauldin; and three grandchildren, Tiffany B. Jones of Wilmington, NC, Michael Chance Smith and Lacie Amber Smith both of Summerville.
He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret E. Smith, his parents and daughter, Jacqueline Denise Absher.
Interment: Plantation Memorial Gardens.
