Margaret was born into the Hunter family in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1804. She was the daughter of John Hunter and his first wife. She lived most of her life in Mecklenburg, and married into another Hunter family. After the death of her husband, (before 1870), Margaret moved in with her daughter's family. During the early 1890's, the family moved to Flowery Branch, Georgia.
According to Margaret's grandson, Watt Smith, and the story shared with Watt's daughter, Louise - Margaret loved her church, enjoyed singing and sewing.
