Mrs. Mehrtens was a member of Gateway Baptist Church in Millstadt, Ill.
Viola was preceded in death by her daughter, Valerie Slaughter; her father, Willie Haney; and a brother, Ellis Haney.
Surviving are her mother, Dorothy Haney; two daughters, Angela (Barry) Pinkelton of Imperial, Mo., and Tina (Sean) Warren of Union, Mo.; a son Herbert (Amanda) Mehrtens Jr., of Maeystown, Ill.; two sisters, Bertha (Lester) Hoerig of Fort Worth, Texas and Lula (Bill) Sullivan of Cahokia, Ill.; two brothers, Melvin (Jackie) Haney of Maryville, Ill., and Charles (Barbara) Haney of O'Fallon, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, David "Beannie" Black, Stephen "Bubba" Mehrtens, Kimberly Black, Eric Slaughter, Bryan and Aaron Jeffers, Ciara Slaughter, Brittany Jeffers, Sean Warren and Heather and Lindsey Pinkelton; three great-grandchildren, Jasmine and Brysen Black and Hunter Pinkelton. She was a dear sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend.
Visitation: Friends may call from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Braun Colonial Funeral Home in Cahokia, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Clark officiating. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairview Heights, Ill.
